Choose it when the top-edge finish is the priority, particularly on laminated, veneered, or easily chipped surfaces. Provide suitable chip clearance because the flute direction pushes debris downward.
It can machine slots, but deep cuts may trap chips and increase heat. Use multiple passes and effective dust extraction, and clear packed debris when necessary.
It generally protects the top edge better than the bottom edge. If both faces must remain clean, a compression bit is usually the more appropriate geometry.
Use a sharp tool, avoid rubbing caused by an unsuitable feed rate, limit depth per pass, and maintain chip clearance. Stop the cut if debris becomes packed in the groove.
