An up cut bit pulls chips upward and out of the cut, making it useful for slotting, pocketing, and through-cutting where chip evacuation is important.
Available sizes include 1-8 mm cutting diameters, 3.175-8 mm shanks, 3-62 mm cutting lengths, and 38-100 mm overall lengths.
The upward flute direction usually clears chips efficiently and supports a clean lower edge, but it can lift fibres or chip the top surface of laminated or wood-based panels.
Choose an up cut bit when chip evacuation, deeper slots, or a clean bottom edge is the priority. Choose a down cut bit when protecting the top face is more important.
The cutting depth must not exceed the usable cutting length of the selected bit. Use multiple passes when the material, bit diameter, or machine rigidity does not support the full depth safely.
Clamp the workpiece securely, use correct hold-down spacing, and avoid excessive depth per pass. Confirm that the collet grips the shank rather than the cutting flutes.
