A compression bit combines up-cut and down-cut flute sections to reduce chipping on both the top and bottom faces of sheet material during through-cutting.
Available sizes include cutting diameters from 3.175 to 12 mm, cutting lengths from 8 to 150 mm, and overall lengths from 38 to 200 mm.
Choose it for through-cuts in double-sided laminated, veneered, or finished panels when clean edges are required on both faces.
The cut must be deep enough for the down-cut section to engage the top surface. If only the lower up-cut section is engaged, the bit can chip the top edge.
It is primarily suited to through-cutting. For shallow pockets or engraving, the mixed flute geometry may not provide the intended surface finish, so a dedicated up-cut, down-cut, or engraving bit is usually better.
Use a rigid hold-down, a sharp bit, minimal runout, and a toolpath that engages the correct flute sections. Match spindle speed, feed, and depth per pass to the material and cutter diameter.
